Part 3: Is my child ready for rock band programs?

Blog / Part 3: Is my child ready for rock band programs?

In part three of this three-part blog series we will explore the rock band programs we offer at Michigan Rock School, and shed some light on when students are ready to participate (read Part one and Part two here.). As these programs aren’t the “typical” model for music lessons, we field many more and varied questions about these lesson programs. The most common, however, is when can my child play in a band. If you happen to have other questions related to rock band programs, please feel free to contact us via e-mail or phone, or if you happen to be in Downtown Milford, stop by and chat with us!

How long until my child can participate in rock band programs?
Because we offer a number of rock band and performance-based programs in conjunction with our lessons, this is a question we hear often from beginners. Much of this depends on the student’s commitment to their instrument and mastering the basics. Some beginner students are ready in just a few weeks, while others might take longer. However, the programs we offer at Michigan Rock School are designed to prepare students for the next steps. For instance, our Beginner Guitar Class is structured in a way to cover the basic in 8 weeks so once students complete it, they will be ready for our introductory rock band programs, like Mini Rock Band and Rock Band 101. While we currently do not have group drum or vocal classes for beginners, often times a month or so in private lessons will prepare a student for rock band programs.

In most cases, we’ve found that students are ready for the rock band programs we offer at Michigan Rock School even if they only have a very basic knowledge of their instrument. Even with complete beginners, they are usually ready for one of our intro rock band programs after just a little bit of coaching. Additionally, we design our lessons programs so students have the opportunity to “move up” to the next level. This instills a sense of accomplishment, keeps students challenged in a positive way, and helps prevent them from growing bored with their lessons.
