Music is more fun with other people.

We built Michigan Rock School around a simple belief: music is a social experience, not a solitary one. Private lessons are important, but the skills that develop when students play together allow them to carry music with them for the rest of their lives. Skills like listening, adapting to the music as it happens, and playing through mistakes as a group. Because music isn’t just memorization and technique. The fun part is when you play together.

Private lessons with a purpose.

At Michigan Rock School, private lessons don’t exist in isolation. Every skill built in a one-on-one lesson has an application — a band rehearsal, a group jam, a live concert. Students learn with their instructor and then put those skills to work with other musicians. That connection between the lesson room and the rehearsal room is what separates Michigan Rock School in Milford from a typical music lesson experience.

The rehearsal room is where confidence is built.

In a private music lesson, a beginner can only compare themselves to an expert. In a band rehearsal, they’re surrounded by peers. Kids playing music at the same level, making the same mistakes, and figuring it out as a team. That peer interaction is how kids grow confident as musicians and in themselves. Some students get there quickly and others take a little longer. We meet them where they are — and most surprise themselves.

Start playing with other musicians on day one.

Most people assume private lessons come first. That you have to reach a certain skill level before playing with others. We disagree. Michigan Rock School offers programs specifically designed for beginners to start making music with other people right away, even before private lessons begin. Kids ages 4-7 can jump straight into Kidz Rock, our beginner rock band program. Kids ages 7-11 can start in Rock Starters, a band program built for players with little to no experience. Private lessons are always an option and some of our programs include them as part of the experience. But at Michigan Rock School, playing music with others is never something you have to wait for.

"I got into the radio business because I'm a huge music fan. But it was so frustrating that I didn't know how to play an instrument. Working with John has been a great experience. Regardless of your skill level. John sees the potential in every person to be a great player. If you are thinking about learning guitar, Michigan Rock School should be your first call"
